Where Did Lice Come From?
Many people are curious about the history of lice, especially those who have had to deal with an infestation in their families. Where do those pesky critters come from? Have they been around since time began? We have a few answers to these questions we want to share below.
First of all, understand that cleanliness and hygiene have nothing to do with lice; you can keep your home spotless and shower every day, and it makes no difference. Lice thrive on the host’s blood and only live in the hair of humans. They can be easily transferred from one person to another through the touching of heads or sharing of brushes, combs and other hair accessories, so it has nothing to do with cleanliness.
Lice Dates Back to 5000 BC
What is known about head lice is that they were around as far back as 5000 BC when nits were discovered on an Egyptian mummy, along with lice combs inside the mummy’s tomb. Early research found that more than 5 1/2 million years ago, chimpanzees had head lice. Scientists believe human head lice evolved from these lice which then split into body lice and head lice. Additionally, a lice egg or “nit” was found in northeast Brazil about 10,000 years ago in the hair of a buried mummy. It’s difficult to know just exactly how far back in history head lice goes, but what is clear is the condition has been around since long before modern time.

The key to prevent spreading is to avoid sharing combs and brushes or touching heads, and to seek treatment immediately.
